Mochi Type Changelog

Stay up to date with the latest features, improvements, and fixes in Mochi Type.

v1.2.5

New

  • Pace caret — A faint line runs under the text at a steady speed: your average, your best, your last session or a speed you set. Try to stay ahead of it. Status bar ▸ Caret ▸ PACE CARET. Full version.
  • Caret motion — The caret glides to the next letter. Pick Slow, Medium or Fast under CARET MOTION, or Off to make it jump.

Improvements

  • All sounds in one menu — Key sounds, the mistype alert and the countdown tick now sit together in the Sound menu, each with its own volume.
  • Pinyin scheme in the Layout menu — In Chinese Practice, switch Full Pinyin, Xiaohe or Ziranma right in the Layout menu.

v1.2.4

Fixes

  • No more crash at launch with iCloud sync on — Mochi Type 1.2.3 quit about two seconds after launch on Macs with iCloud sync turned on in Settings ▸ Backup. This update fixes it; if you turned sync off as a workaround, you can turn it back on.

v1.2.3

New

  • Practice in 30-second sessions — Pick ½ next to 1, 2, 3 and 5 in the toolbar, in Practice or Learn. Half a minute is an easier start when a full minute still feels long. New profiles start at ½, and your existing profiles keep the length they already use. Half-minute sessions count in Stats, but they don't set personal bests: Practice records stay at 1, 2, 3 and 5 minutes.
  • Watch your letters fall when a session ends — When a session ends, the text on screen crumbles line by line, tumbles down and lands on your results, then fades away in about four seconds. Letters you mistyped keep their error color as they fall. Your results appear right away underneath, and a click clears the letters at once. It's on by default. To turn it off, open Settings ▸ General ▸ Effects and switch off Letter drop at session end. It stays off while Reduce Motion is on in macOS.

Improvements

  • The timer sits right above your text — While you type, the timer shows on its own line just above the first line of text, in your typing font at a slightly smaller size. You can check the time without looking away to the corner of the window, and the toolbar corners stay clear during a session. Idea by Ján
  • Move the window from any empty spot — Drag the window by the empty space around the text and keyboard, or by the text itself. Double-click the same space to enter or leave full screen. Buttons and keys still work as before.

v1.2.2

New

  • Hear when you mistype — Open the sound menu at the bottom of the window and turn on Mistype sound. Pick Typo, Koalas or Razer Huntsman TE. It plays instead of the key click whenever you press a wrong key, a little louder than your key sounds. It also works with key sounds turned off. It stays off until you turn it on. Idea by Jeffry
  • Feel the keys on your trackpad — Move the pointer across the on-screen keyboard and a Force Touch trackpad taps at every key edge. F and J tap twice, like the bumps on a real keyboard. It's on by default. You can turn it off in Settings ▸ Accessibility ▸ Feel the keys on the trackpad. If you feel nothing, turn on “Force Click and haptic feedback” in macOS Trackpad settings. Mochi Type shows a hint there with a button that opens them.
  • Mochi Type in Italian and Vietnamese — The whole interface is now in Italian and Vietnamese. Mochi Type follows your Mac's language, or you can pick one in Settings ▸ General ▸ App Language.

Performance

  • Faster switching and Library editing — Switching between Practice and Learn, choosing Practice content and changing Stats tabs all respond faster. In the Library, typing, saving and searching your texts is quicker. An edit that hasn't been saved yet is saved when you quit.

v1.2.1

Performance

  • Typing feels more immediate — Each keystroke reaches the screen faster, and long texts stay just as responsive as short ones.
  • Keyboard sounds follow your fingers — Click sounds start sooner after each key press, so the sound lines up with your typing.
  • Stats and lessons open faster — Switching between the Trends, Learn and Practice tabs in Stats takes less time, and the lesson list opens faster.
  • Lighter on your Mac — Mochi Type uses noticeably less memory during everyday practice.

Improvements

  • See your 3- and 5-minute records — Stats → Practice now shows your personal bests for 3- and 5-minute sessions next to the 1- and 2-minute ones. Records from sessions you already typed show up right away.
  • A tip for Bluetooth headphones — When sound plays through Bluetooth headphones or AirPlay, a short tip under the keyboard explains that the headset adds sound delay. For an instant click, use built-in speakers or wired headphones. The tip fades after a few seconds, and × hides it for good.

v1.2.0

New

  • Ready for macOS 27 Golden Gate — Mochi Type is built with the macOS 27 SDK and checked against the new release, so it looks and behaves right on Golden Gate from day one.
  • Choose how long a Learn session runs — Set a lesson to 1, 2, 3 or 5 minutes — or pick ∞ and drop the timer entirely. With ∞ you type as long as you like and press Esc whenever you're done to see your results. Idea by Arto

Improvements

  • Lessons 1 and 2 unlock at 90% accuracy — The first two lessons are where you're still finding the keys, so they now open the next one at 90% accuracy instead of 95%. Every lesson after that keeps the 95% bar.

v1.1.9

New

  • Delete a session right from the chart — Spotted a stray result on your progress chart? Right-click the point and delete it — no need to hunt for it in the history list. Idea by Marco

Fixes

  • Average speed in CPM mode is now the real average — If you measure your speed in characters per minute, the Average tile used to show your words-per-minute average multiplied by five — close, but not quite your number. Now it's the true average of your CPM results. Reported by James
  • Deleted sessions disappear immediately — Deleting a session from its details screen sometimes left the row in the history list until you switched windows. It goes away right away now. Reported by Marco

Improvements

  • Your speed unit, everywhere — Stability, Skill Score, the Best legend and the Consistency footer used to say “WPM” even when you'd switched to CPM. They now follow your unit.
  • Small refinements throughout — A few little fixes here and there. Nothing changes in how you type — it just runs a little smoother.

v1.1.8

New

  • Mochi Type now speaks French — Every screen, hint and stat is now in French. Switch the language in Settings ▸ General.

Fixes

  • Your CPM score is now spot on — If you measure your speed in characters per minute, your best score could show up a few characters lower than what you actually typed — 460 instead of 463, for example. Now your records, history and charts show exactly what you did. Reported by Marco

Improvements

  • Small refinements throughout — A few little fixes here and there. Nothing changes in how you type — it just runs a little smoother.

v1.1.7

Improvements

  • No more crash on macOS 26 — Mochi Type could quit when the Mac woke from sleep while the app was in full screen on macOS 26. Fixed.
  • Small improvements throughout — A round of interface polish and stability work under the hood. Nothing to relearn — everything just sits a little better.

v1.1.6

New

  • Two themes for color-blind vision — Clarity Dark is built for red-green color blindness; Ink Mono drops color altogether and works in pure black and white. Both are free. Alongside them, a setting that makes every hint in the app readable without color at all: mistakes are marked by shape, and statistics stop using hue to tell good from bad.
  • Type Chinese with Pinyin — Mochi Type now teaches Chinese. The full sixteen-lesson course, with the characters shown under the pinyin as you type it — so you always see the word you are producing. Three Chinese word sets come with it: confusable sounds, sayings from the classics, and lines from the great novels. Five books to read through, from a beginner's primer to Tang poetry.
  • Double Pinyin, if that is how you type — Two schemes are built in — Xiaohe and Ziranma — spelling every syllable in exactly two keys. Turn one on in Settings and the key map appears right on the on-screen keyboard. The course itself stays in full pinyin: that is where the fingers are set.
  • Mochi Type now speaks Chinese — The whole interface — menus, settings, statistics, results — is now translated into Simplified Chinese.

Improvements

  • Practice in minutes, not seconds — Practice sessions now run for 1, 2, 3 or 5 minutes. The old durations were counted in seconds, which read oddly next to a course measured in lessons.
  • Settings, reorganized — Six panes became four, and the theme picker is now a grid of previews instead of a list fourteen rows long — you can see what a theme looks like before choosing it.
  • Smoother with VoiceOver — The typing area, the results screen and the statistics all read in a sensible order now, and the keyboard announces the next key without interrupting itself.

v1.1.5

New

  • Demo books in four languages — The Custom Texts section now comes with demo books to type your way through: a verb workbook, a travel phrasebook, a Python syntax workbook and classic reading — five each in English, German, Russian and Ukrainian. Open one like any custom text and Mochi remembers where you stopped.
  • Start at a random paragraph — Custom texts have a new start option, so every session begins somewhere else and a long text never runs the same way twice.
  • Search your library — Find any text from the sidebar — demo books and your own imports alike.

Improvements

  • Tidier right-click menu — The typing area's context menu is grouped into clear sections, and editing a custom text is one click — or ⌘T — away.
  • Polish — Cleaner paragraph markers, a better VoiceOver reading order, and small fixes throughout.

v1.1.4

New

  • Mochi Type ahora habla español — The whole interface is now available in Spanish — switch the language in Settings.
  • Stats export — Export your statistics to JSON or CSV, with a full per-key breakdown — your data is yours to analyze.

Improvements

  • On-screen keyboard labels — Keys are now labeled to match your selected layout.
  • Faster iCloud on first launch — The connection is quicker and heals itself if the first attempt fails.
  • Polish — Tidier stat tiles, a lighter app, and small fixes throughout.

v1.1.3

New

  • Mochi Type speaks Russian, Ukrainian, and German — The whole interface is translated — switch the language in Settings.

Improvements

  • A clearer content picker in Practice — Three tidy columns, easier to read, more of your custom texts at a glance.
  • Steadier iCloud sync — Smoother, more dependable syncing right from launch, plus interface refinements throughout.

v1.1.2

New

  • Practice on your own texts — Paste any passage, or import a .txt, .md, .rtf, or .epub file — an article, a book, your notes — and type it. Mochi cleans it up for typing and remembers your place.
  • Your texts on every Mac — Imported texts and reading positions sync privately across your Macs with iCloud.

Improvements

  • Smoother session starts — Typing is fluid from the very first word of a fast session, with a round of reliability fixes across the app.

v1.1.1

New

  • Mochi Type has switched to a freemium model — Already bought Mochi Type? Nothing changes for you. The app is now a free download with a one-time In-App Purchase that opens the full version — and as an existing buyer you already own it: everything stays unlocked automatically, forever, at no extra cost. If the app ever asks you to buy the unlock (it shouldn't), just press Restore Purchase and everything comes right back.
  • Reduce Transparency — A new option in Settings › General. Turn it on for solid window backgrounds instead of the frosted blur — cleaner, and easier on the eyes.

Improvements

  • Apostrophes that match your keyboard — Words with apostrophes in Ukrainian, French, Italian and English now accept whichever apostrophe key your layout has — the native one, a straight ', or a curly '. No more errors for your own keyboard's apostrophe, and the hint points right to it.

v1.1.0

New

  • Word Emphasis — a new Font option — The start of each word is set a little bolder — which some people find easier to follow while they type. Turn it on in the Font menu; it only changes how the text looks, never what you type.

Improvements

  • Refined UI — A sharper full-screen keyboard and a cleaner first-run setup, now tuned for macOS Light Mode.
  • Full screen that fits your theme — In full screen, the background now takes on your selected theme's color instead of a washed-out system gray.
  • Under the hood — A steadier, more reliable Mochi.

v1.0

New

  • Hello, Mochi Type — The first release on the Mac App Store: a guided touch-typing course, free practice on real words in 21 languages and 48 keyboard layouts, per-key statistics, color themes, sound packs, and private iCloud sync.
