Typing Polish Letters on a Mac: the Cheapest Keystroke

You need nine letters — ą ć ę ł ń ó ś ź ż — and your Mac has a layout that produces all of them.

The awkward part is that some of them come out of two different keystrokes. ś is Option+S. ś is also Option+Shift+T. Both are real, both are on the same layout, and nothing in macOS tells you which one to put in your fingers.

That choice is the whole page, and the rule that settles it is worth more than the Polish answer. The drilling afterwards is what Mochi Type is for — its Polish course runs on this same layout.

The short version

Add Apple's Polish layout and every Polish letter becomes one keystroke: hold Option, press the letter's own key. Option and A gives ą, Option and S gives ś, Option and L gives ł. Add Shift for the capital. Only one letter breaks the pattern — ź, which sits on X, because ż had already taken Z.

Six of the eighteen — the nine letters plus their capitals — answer to a second, unrelated key as well, and nothing on your Mac tells you which of the two to learn. The rule is: whichever needs fewer keys held down, and on a tie the letter's own key. That settles every case on this page.

If you would rather not add a layout at all, know the price. On ABC, the plain US layout, eight of the nine letters cannot be typed at all. On ABC – Extended all nine can, but each one takes two presses instead of one.

Knowing the chords and having them in your fingers are different things. Mochi Type drills the Polish layout and shows you which key to press before you press it — always the cheaper of the two, where a letter has two. It reads the physical key you pressed, so you can practise while your Mac stays on ABC, with nothing added to the input menu.

It is a typing tutor, not a system utility: it does not change any macOS setting, install a layout, or repair anything on the Mac. And its free tier stops after stage 5, which is before the first Polish diacritic — the nine chords themselves are in the first table below, free.

The layout is not called what the internet says

Nearly every answer online tells you to add something called Polish Pro. There is no entry by that name to find. The one you want is listed as plainly as it could be — just Polish — and the other Polish entry in that list is a different keyboard altogether, dealt with near the end of this page.

Look for yourself: on macOS 26.6 the input sources live at System Settings → Keyboard → Text Input → Input Sources → Edit… — the three labels after Keyboard are all shipped strings in that pane’s own string table.

There are two Polish entries, and their names and identifiers are crossed:

That is the right way round. The plainly-named “Polish” is the one whose identifier ends in PolishPro; the one whose identifier is bare Polish is labelled “Polish – QWERTZ”, with a U+2013 en dash.

I asked Text Input Services for the localised name of each source directly, and got exactly Polish and Polish – QWERTZ. The name Polish Pro, which every older answer uses, does not come back from macOS 26.6 at all. If you are hunting for it in the list, you will not find it.

Everything below is about the first one, the QWERTY-shaped one.

Nine letters, nine chords, not one of them a dead key

This is the good news, and it is the reason to add the layout at all. Every Polish letter has a key of its own: hold Option, press the key the letter belongs to, and the letter comes out. Nothing to press first, nothing to hold down and wait for. One press, one letter.

Eight of the nine sit on the key you would guess — ą on A, ś on S, ł on L. The ninth, ź, sits on X, which has a reason and a section of its own further down.

Capitals are the same key with Shift added — Option+Shift+A gives Ą (U+0104), and so on. That holds for all nine, with no exception. Two of them, Ń and Ż, also have a cheaper route on an unrelated key, which is the next section.

One thing is worth stating plainly because it is what people expect and it is not true here: none of the nine chords above is a dead key. Each one emits its letter on the press.

The layout does carry dead keys — exactly three, all inherited from the US Option layer: Option+, Option+U and Option+I, whose own glyphs are , ¨ and ^. What it has no dead key for is the acute: Option+E, the acute on every US-family layout, has been handed to ę.

Those three deserve one paragraph, because their completion tables on macOS 26.6 are strange, and five of their sequences do land on a Polish letter. Type them yourself and watch — any text field will do, once the Polish input source is the active one:

Those shift states are as printed — the sequence that yields a capital Ź uses an unshifted e, and the one that yields a lower-case ś uses Shift. Option+U, the diaeresis, reaches no Polish letter at all. None of this changes the answer, because every one of those is two presses against a one-press chord, but “you cannot get a Polish letter out of a dead key here” would be false, and this page is not going to say it.

So Polish on a Mac is a chord problem, not a dead-key problem. Every letter you actually type is one press, with a modifier held.

Six of the eighteen have a second keystroke

This is where the wrong keystroke gets learned and then kept for years. Six of these characters answer to two completely different keys, and the text that comes out is the same either way — so nothing you can see afterwards tells you that you took the long way round.

In every one of the six, one keystroke is on the letter’s own key and the other is on a key with nothing to do with it. The left column below is the letter’s own key; the right one is the surprise. Which of the two is actually cheaper to type is the section after this.

Nine letters and nine capitals is eighteen characters, and six of them are reachable two ways.

I do not know why Apple put a second copy of those six on unrelated keys — it duplicates a handful of non-Polish characters the same way, §, £, ‚ and „ among them — and I am not going to invent a reason. What matters is that the duplicates are there, and that on four of the six one route costs an extra modifier.

The rule

When a character is reachable more than one way, learn the one with the fewest modifiers. On a tie, learn the one on the letter’s own base key.

Cost decides most of it. Option+S is one modifier and Option+Shift+T is two, so ś is on S. Option+L beats Option+Shift+P, so ł is on L.

The tie-break does the rest. ń sits on both F and N at one modifier each — no cost difference, so it goes to N, which is where your hand will go looking for it under pressure. Ó sits on both O and H at two modifiers each, and goes to O for the same reason.

Then there are two answers you will not like.

Ż is cheaper on Option+K than on Option+Shift+Z. One modifier against two. Ń is cheaper on Option+1 than on Option+Shift+N — the digit 1, left little finger, nothing to do with the letter N.

A rule earns its keep by surviving the case where you dislike the answer, so here is the practical weight of each. In Mochi Type’s largest Polish word list — the one labelled Top 50K, 49,551 words — 243 begin with ż and exactly zero begin with ń. Capital Ż is a letter you will type: Życie, Żeby, Żaden. Capital Ń is a curiosity, because Polish words do not start with it. Option+K is worth learning. Option+1 is worth knowing exists.

Either keystroke produces identical text: U+017B is U+017B, and nothing downstream can tell which key made it — which is also why an expensive habit here stays invisible. The text never shows which route you took, so nothing corrects you until something watches the keys themselves.

ź is where the pattern was always going to break

One letter will not follow the pattern, and there is nothing to do about it but remember. It is the one Polish letter whose own key does not produce it, so guessing from the alphabet gets you the wrong key.

ź (U+017A) is on X, not on Z, and it has no second chord anywhere on the layout. The only other way to it is the two-press Option+I sequence from the dead-key table above, which the rule discards on cost. So there is nothing to choose.

ż claimed the Z key, ź went next door, and Windows’ default Polish layout arranges the two the same way, on AltGr instead of Option. Which means “the accented letter lives on its own base key” is a description of Apple’s layout most of the time, not a law of it. The part that always holds is the first half: fewest modifiers.

What staying on ABC costs

If the real question is whether to add a Polish layout at all, here is the price, measured the same way.

Staying on the layout you already have costs you one of two things: eight of the nine letters, or double the keystrokes on all nine. Which of the two depends on which US layout you are on.

On ABC — Apple’s plain US layout — exactly one of the nine is reachable: ó, as Option+E then O. I tested all nine against every key code, every modifier state and every dead-key sequence the layout offers. The other eight have no keystroke. (One curiosity that falls out of the same sweep: capital Ó is a single chord on ABC, Option+Shift+H. It is the only Polish capital that is, and it is no use to you — the letter you actually need in running text is the lower-case ó.)

On ABC – Extended (com.apple.keylayout.USExtended, which System Settings labels with an en dash, not “U.S. Extended”) all nine are reachable, and every one is two presses:

ł is the interesting row. U+0142 has no canonical decomposition — it is not an l with a mark on it, it is its own letter — so it cannot be composed the way ć is composed from c plus U+0301. ABC – Extended reaches it anyway, because Option+L there is not an accent dead key at all: it is the stroke dead key, and it bars whatever follows — d becomes đ, t becomes ŧ, h becomes ħ, and l becomes ł. The other two dead keys in the table are ordinary accents: Option+M is the ogonek (ą, ę) and Option+W the dot above (ż).

So: nine letters at one chord each on Polish, nine at two presses each on ABC – Extended, one out of nine on ABC. Across a sentence that difference is nothing. Across a page of Polish it is the difference between typing and transcribing.

One thing I could not check. The press-and-hold accent popup keeps its candidate lists somewhere I could not read on macOS 26.6 — the PressAndHold extension ships no plist of them — so I am not going to tell you which letters it offers. What is true whatever it contains is that it is a hold, a pause and a selection from a menu. That is a different activity from typing, and it does not become a keystroke by being fast.

The other Polish layout

Polish – QWERTZ solves the same problem from the opposite end: it gives the Polish letters their own keys, off the Option layer entirely — in lower case. ż, ó, ł and ą are unshifted. ź, ę, ś, ń and ć are on Shift.

The capitals are where it takes the money back. Only Ł and Ż are plain Shift; the other seven — Ą, Ć, Ę, Ń, Ó, Ś, Ź — need Option after all, and five of those need Option and Shift together.

It also moves things. Y and Z trade places — the key where QWERTY puts Z types y, and the key right of T types z — and the comma and full-stop keys swap with each other.

Which to learn has no general answer, and anyone who gives you one is selling something. The Option layout leaves every other key exactly where QWERTY put it, which matters if you also write English, or code, or use keyboard shortcuts. The QWERTZ layout keeps the lower-case diacritics off the Option layer — four of the nine off every modifier — and charges you the Y/Z positions, most of the punctuation row, and Option on seven of the nine capitals instead. If you learned to type in Poland, you already know which one your hands expect.

Drilling the Polish chords in Mochi Type

A table of chords is not the same as having them under your fingers, and the six duplicates above are exactly the sort of thing that gets learned wrong once and then stays learned.

Mochi Type ships both Polish layouts, named QWERTY (Polish) and QWERTZ (Polish), and drills either one while your Mac stays on ABC — nothing added to the input menu, nothing changed about how you type the rest of the day. When a Polish letter comes up it shows you the key before you press it, and the key it shows is the cheaper of the two where a letter has two. Use the other route anyway and it still counts. The diacritics do not all land at once, either: they arrive in pairs, late in the course.

If you do want the mechanical version: it resolves what you type from the physical key code rather than from the character your Mac sends, which is what lets you drill a layout the system is not set to. How that works is its own page.

Its next-key hint follows the rule above, because in this case the rule is the code: cheapest path first, base-letter key on a tie. Type ś and it lights S, plus the Option key on the opposite hand — right Option for a left-hand letter, left Option for a right-hand one — with the glyph you are about to get drawn on the S keycap. Type Ż and it lights K, for the reason in the table. The other path is still accepted when you use it: input is compared by resolved character, not by which keys you happened to press.

The Polish course runs 11 letter groups before the advanced stages, and the diacritics arrive late and in pairs — ó and ę at stage 7, ą and ń at stage 8, ć, ż and ź at stage 9, ł and ś at stage 10, out of 17 stages counting the Final Test. Capitals is stage 12, and its focus set is every letter Polish has taught, uppercased, all nine included.

It is a typing tutor, not a system utility: it does not change any macOS setting, install a layout, or repair anything on the Mac. Drilling QWERTZ in it does not put QWERTZ on your Mac — that is the System Settings pane in the first section, and it stays your job.

The boundary, stated properly: the free tier stops after stage 5. You will not meet a single Polish diacritic before the $12.99 unlock. If the nine chords in the first table are what you came for, this page has already given you them, and you owe nobody anything.

The rule outlives the layout

Every time macOS offers you two ways to the same character, count the modifiers before you argue about which key it belongs on. Cost first, anatomy second. It is the same question underneath which Cyrillic arrangement is worth committing to, and the same reason two layouts that produce identical text can be a minute apart over a page.

Six Polish characters on Apple’s layout have two keystrokes, and on four of them one is genuinely cheaper than the other. Learning the six is about ten minutes. Not knowing they exist is a habit you carry for years.

Common questions

How do I type ś on a Mac?

On Apple's Polish layout, ś is Option+S and Ś is Option+Shift+S. The same layout also produces ś on Option+Shift+T — a genuine second path, but two modifiers instead of one, which makes it the wrong one to learn. Both emit U+015B and nothing downstream can tell which keys you pressed. System Settings shows this layout simply as "Polish"; its identifier is com.apple.keylayout.PolishPro.

Are Polish letters dead keys on a Mac?

Not the ones worth learning. On Apple's Polish layout (identifier com.apple.keylayout.PolishPro) all nine — ą ć ę ł ń ó ś ź ż — are single Option chords, typed in one press; Option+E, which is the acute dead key on US layouts, has been given over to ę instead. The layout does carry exactly three dead keys — Option+`, Option+U and Option+I — and on macOS 26.6 five of their sequences do land on a Polish letter: Option+` then a gives ą, Option+` then e gives Ź, Option+I then e gives ź, Option+I then Shift+E gives ś, Option+I then Shift+A gives Ś. Every one of those is two presses against a one-press chord, so none of them is the keystroke to put in your fingers. Two presses only become unavoidable if you stay on ABC – Extended, where all nine cost two.

Can I type Polish without adding a Polish keyboard?

Partly, and the price is exact. Polish needs nine letters — ą ć ę ł ń ó ś ź ż. On macOS 26.6's plain ABC layout precisely one of them is reachable: ó, as Option+E then O. The other eight have no keystroke at all; I confirmed that by testing all 48 alphanumeric key codes across all four modifier states plus every dead-key sequence ABC offers. On ABC – Extended all nine are reachable, but each takes two presses: ł is Option+L then L, ą is Option+M then A, ż is Option+W then Z. Only Apple's Polish layout gets you all nine at one chord each.

Why is ź on the X key rather than the Z key?

Because ż took Z first. On Apple's Polish layout ż (U+017C) is Option+Z and ź (U+017A) is Option+X, and ź has no second chord anywhere on the layout — the only other route to it is the two-press dead-key sequence Option+I then e, which loses on cost. So there is nothing to choose between. It is the one Polish letter where the pattern "the accented letter sits on its own base key" does not hold, so it is worth memorising as an exception rather than deriving.

Which Polish keyboard layouts does macOS have?

Two, and their labels and identifiers are crossed. System Settings shows "Polish", whose identifier is com.apple.keylayout.PolishPro, and "Polish – QWERTZ", whose identifier is com.apple.keylayout.Polish. The first is QWERTY with all nine diacritics on the Option layer; the second swaps Y and Z, swaps the comma and full-stop keys, and gives the lower-case Polish letters their own keys with no Option involved — though seven of the nine capitals still need Option on it. On macOS 26.6 the words "Polish Pro" do not appear as a layout name anywhere: I asked Text Input Services for the localised name of every keyboard layout the system ships — 251 of them — and no name contains it.

What is the cheapest-keystroke rule?

When a character can be typed several ways, learn the one with the fewest modifiers; when two paths tie, learn the one on the letter's own base key. On Apple's Polish layout that gives ś = Option+S rather than Option+Shift+T, and ń = Option+N rather than Option+F. It also produces two answers people dislike: Ż is cheaper on Option+K than on Option+Shift+Z, and Ń is cheaper on Option+1 than on Option+Shift+N.
